What a beautiful sight – cheery bright yellow sunflowers in every direction. This was my first visit to a sunflower farm and I must make this an annual trip. It is true, sunflowers are happy flowers and just make you smile. Bergsbaken Farms is in Cecil, WI which is in the northeastern part of the state. The farmer has turned their sunflower field into a family adventure. There are smooth walking paths cut through the field with a three wooden viewing platforms to allow you to “get high” to see over the tops of the flowers. For all you social butterflies, there is an assortment of photo props to help you capture that perfect picture. I grabbed a pair lopping shears and cut two sunflowers to take home. Next time I need to bring a bucket of water to keep my flowers fresh on the drive home. The sunflower field is open from sunrise to sunset and is self-serve. Admission is a $2 donation per person and the cut-your-own flowers are $1 each or six for $5. I displayed my flowers in a tall vase on my kitchen table and they lasted about a week.
Bergsbaken Farms is family owned and operated. They provide locally grown whole corn, black oil sunflower seed, sweet corn, and other special commodities. They hold an annual Sunflower Fest at the end of July. During the festival the farm organizes all kinds of fun family activities in addition to walking amongst the sunflowers and taking pictures. Visitors can take a ride on the sunflower wagon, enter a quilt raffle, purchase sunflower & corn related products and listen to live music. Plus they offer a variety of kids’ activities: balloon animals, face painting, sunflower craft, corn pit and bounce house. I missed the Sunflower Fest this year. I will be sure to mark my calendar for this event next year
