It happens only once a year. National Blueberry Pie Day is today, April 28 – time to celebrate. Yes, this is a recognized event in the world of food holidays. According to NationalDayCalendar.com, April 28 is National Blueberry Pie Day. Sounds like a good excuse to bake a fresh blueberry pie and treat your family to some blueberry deliciousness.
Here in the United States, blueberry season is just around the corner. The Blueberry harvest varies by state starting as early as April in Florida and going into late August in Main. You will soon start seeing blueberries from US growers in your grocery stores and local farmer’s market. This year why not go blueberry picking for the freshest locally grown berries. There are many U-Pick Blueberry Farms across the country with picking starting in late spring and running through the summer months. U-Pick Farm Locator can help you find blueberry farms near you. Make it a family fun day, visit a pick your own blueberry farm and savor the taste of summer.
National Blueberry Pie Day
In honor of National Blueberry Pie Day I made a classic blueberry pie recipe from SimpleRecipes.com. The recipe calls for 6 cups of fresh or frozen blueberries. I used frozen blueberries as fresh blueberries are very expensive in April in my local grocery store. Note that if you use frozen berries make sure you plan extra time for letting them thaw before filling your pie. I used my new white Le Creuset Pie Dish and my Blueberry Pie Funnel which gets inserted in the middle of the pie to vent the steam. I am happy to report that no juices bubbled over the sides. Now I cannot claim that this blueberry pie is good for you with ½ cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of butter, but there must be some benefit to all those blueberries. Bake and enjoy on National Blueberry Pie Day! Visit my Pinterest Board Blueberry Recipes for great pie inspiration.
